Hopworks 150 and new Dubbel
by Beeraroundtown ~ April 2nd, 2009. Filed under: Uncategorized.I finally got the chance to drop into Hopworks to a couple new beers the other day. I got word that their Oregon 150 beer was still on tap, so I thought I would smite my taste buds for a bit. According to a couple of the local blogs they went and dumped 150 lbs. of Oregon hops into this batch creating a monster 100+ IBU IPA. The result? The beer is bitter and tastes like hops… hows that for a review? There is no need for a recommendation or opinion on this. Sure to appease the hop heads, pure golden pine resin in a glass, sharply bitter, oily textured. We know why you ordered this, here you go, don’t complain. Aside from trying to make something coincide with the number 150, nothing was probably necessary about this, I’m sure you end up with diminishing returns, lots of wasted hops, which in these days are damn expensive. They probably could have taken the hops after and sloshed them over to their next batch and had plenty of bitterness to spare, sort of small beer style in a way. If you have one of those gluttonous personalities and feel Portland hasn’t been fulfilling your lupulin lust, your bitter tooth needing its next fix of hop smack, get down to Hopworks before this runs out.
Now, with all that said, only after I had my glass of hop juice did I realize they had their new Suplex Belgian Dubbel on tap. I gave it a shot, but I can’t imagine any review would be fair after that hop bomb, so I’ll have to save that review for another time. I have to say the beer pours really nice as the above photo shows. If anyone has tried this yet I’d like to hear your thoughts.

I’ll say this about it: the dubbel is beautiful. Great pic. I feel I would be in accord with you on the 150. Sometimes you wish breweries had thought of somthing other than massive hops, but maybe they sell well.

I only had a small sample of the dubbel, so take this with a grain of salt, but it seemed a little cloying and under-carbonated. I’ll need to give it another shot though as the taste was interesting otherwise. I heard that a small portion was soured in pinot barrels, which I could subtly detect in my small sample.
I unapologetically love the 150. I realize that makes me uncool, but I’m fine with that.

Joe,
Yah, I remember it being a bit flat and as the picture shows it doesn’t have a whole lot of carbonation activity going on. This might start a whole new article on carbonation that I’ve been wondering about.

i agree with the last two reviewers.. awesome roddy piper tap handle, but that’s where the awesomeness ends. the beer was flat, too dry & chalky, overall weird and not at all dubbelish. it seems to take inspiration from allagash dubbel, which is one of the worst american interpretations of belgian ales. mind you, this opinion is coming from someone who usually loves hopworks beer. just goes to show ya how hit-or-miss they can be.
